Eating with the Romans - A talk on Roman Food by Kate Colquhoun
Saturday 28th June, Verulamium Museum, 12pm, 01727 751 810, St Michael’s Street, AL3 4SW
The Romans changed not only the look and feel of Britain but its very taste. Introducing many of the vegetables, herbs and spices that we now take for granted, as well as sophisticated husbandry skills, they vitalised the art of cooking in Britain. From the letters sent home by the Roman soldiers at the Vindolanda Fort on Hadrian’s Wall, to the fishy condiment that was to all Romans the essence of home. Historian and writer Kate Colquhoun takes us on a whirlwind tour of what cooking meant to Roman society, what we know about what and how they cooked, and how their obsession with food even influenced the way Roman-British villas were constructed. Celebrate St Albans heritage and the Food and Drink Festival, all in the historical surroundings of the Verulamium Museum. In addition The Verulam Arms will be providing some Roman food to suit the occasion and providing some offers at the restaurant this evening for people who attend the event.
The event is FREE. To book your place, please call 01727 751 810. Museum entry fees apply to non-residents of City and District of St Albans.
